The bandage is the most important item in the first aid box. These are useful in everyday life to deal with minor and major injuries. Bandages are only useful if they are applied correctly and firmly.

What is a Bandage?

The bandage is made up of paper or cloth. It is used to keep dressing in place to cover the wound properly. It protects wounds from infection, and the external environment and provides favorable conditions for wounds to heal. It provides support and restricts the movements of the body part.

Types of Bandages

Different types of bandages with different sizes, shapes, materials, and functions are used to treat a wide range of injuries and wounds.

Crepe Bandage

It is also known as gauze or roller bandage. It is made up of cotton gauze used to hold the dressing in place. It also gives support to immobilized joints.

Adhesive Bandage

It is also called sticking plaster. It is a small bandage with a pad made of cotton with antiseptic properties covered with a thin film to protect it from sticking to wounds.

Some pads are made up of water-absorbent hydrogels. It is applied to protect wounds from bacteria, dust, and friction.

Triangular Bandage

It is also called AeroBand triangular bandage. These bandages are used for multipurpose.

These are used to give support to broken bones. These bandages compress swelling and bleeding wounds.

Tubular Bandage

It is used for holding dressing on fingers and toes. Elastic tubular bandages are also available to provide compression on the wrist, ankle, and knee when applied. It reduces swelling and gives support to joints during movement.

Compression Bandage

It is a long stretchable cloth that can be wrapped around muscle strain or sprain. It is also called a Tensor bandage.

It gives gentle pressure to the affected area and helps in reducing swelling. It is useful in the treatment of swelling and pain caused by varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, poor blood flow, etc.

Liquid Bandage

It is a transparent, adhesive, and antiseptic solution that is directly sprayed or applied on wounds. It reduces pain and heals wounds by creating a protective covering on the wound.

It maintains proper moisture levels and protects wounds from bacteria and dust.

Two types of liquid bandages are available. Skin protectants are mild astringents used to treat various skin conditions including diaper rash, burns, scrapes, etc.

Suture replacements are used on bleeding wounds and are used in major surgical procedures to repair cuts to internal organs.

Kirigami Bandage

It is the most advanced bandage made up of stretchable cloth, lightweight inspired by Japanese kirigami art.

Kirigami bandage is made up of 3D printed mold. It sticks to joints and elbows very well because of the adhesive film and allows the entry of drugs into the affected area.

Conclusion

Bandages are very important to cover the wounds because leaving the wound uncovered causes the death of cells which in turn prolonged the healing process.

It helps in the speedy recovery and protects wounds from dirt and bacteria.
